Semana 1: La Llegada & The Great Olive Oil Escape (aka, San Antonio, Texas - the "Texas Andaluz"!)
Domingo: El Aterrizaje & Initial Mild Panic
- 14:00: Llegamos a San Antonio. ¡El calor! Ya me estoy sofocando solo de pensarlo. This Texas heat… is it even legal?! We land, grab our rental car - a beige monstrosity I've already named "La Tortuga" because, well, she's slow and steady.
- 16:00: Check-in en el Hotel Emma. Oooooh, fancy pants! This place is supposed to be a repurposed brewery. Fingers crossed it hasn't been taken over by ghosts! The reviews raved about the details and architecture.
- 17:30: The Grand Tour along the River Walk. Okay, okay, it's picturesque. But SO many people! Seriously, at least a dozen people asked me where my accent was from. "Andalucía… ¿Conocen España?". I feel like a walking, talking tourist cliché.
- 19:00: Dinner at Cured. Ahhh, blesses. Supposed to be a foodie must-go. The charcuterie board was divine. I may or may not have ordered a second plate of everything just for myself. The olive oil… well, the olive oil was when the whole thing happened. Their olive oil changed my life. I swore I wanted to move there just to spend my days on that delicious olive oil.
Lunes: La Misión & The Secret Market
- 09:00: Mission San José. Okay, this place is genuinely breathtaking. The carved stonework… the history… I actually felt a little emotional. Like I wanted to know the person who made it, maybe I could stay there with them.
- 12:00: Lunch at a taquería I found via a tip from a local. These tacos…. oh, the tacos! Just the memory makes me drool.
- 14:00: Found a street market behind the Main Plaza. This market was not in any guidebooks. This is where the real magic is at. Saw beautiful handmade belts, a woman selling vintage embroidered shawls… I bought something I definitely didn't need but can't live without.
Martes: El Álamo & The Disappointing Food
- 10:00: El Álamo. The Alamo. It felt much smaller than I imagined. And crowded! People were just everywhere. I tried to feel the history, the bravery, but all I could feel was someone's elbow in my back.
- 12:00: Lunch. Decided to try a restaurant I saw on our way. Big mistake. The food was bland, the service slow, and I swear I saw a fly land in my soup! I wanted to cry.
- 14:00: Recovered with a big coffee and a pastry.
Miércoles: The Plaza & The Fiesta
- 10:00: Plaza de las Armas. Another hermosa spot. I love historical places and the colors and architecture.
- 19:00: Fiesta! San Antonio is having a fiesta. We went to a street fair. I ate some churros. Then I was so tired I went straight to bed.
Jueves: The Missions and the long drives
- 9:00: We went to more missions and went for a drive. The countryside was beautiful, but it was a long drive.
- 14:00: We realized we were hungry. Found a restaurant, but the food was bad. I wanted to go home.
Viernes: The last day
- 9:00: Went to the market.
- 12:00: Said goodbye to our favorite spot
- 14:00: Started planning our next trip.
- 17:00: Drive to the airport
Reflexiones Finales (Final Thoughts):
San Antonio is… a mixed bag. The River Walk is beautiful, but the crowds can be overwhelming. The history is amazing, the Missions are worth seeing. The food… well, it's a roll of the dice. But the heart? The people? They're absolutely Andalusian-spirited. They are kind, they are warm, they are welcoming. This isn't Spain, of course – but it's got a taste of it, and that's enough for me, for now.
And that olive oil… I'm still dreaming of it. Maybe I'll start packing my bags now to move to San Antonio…
